This job interview is one of the first times you will sit across from someone who has been in your shoes for a while. Whether you have worked with them before or not, knowing what they did and the context in which they did it will make you feel more comfortable. This job interview is also one of the first times you will sit across from a manager who has been with you for a while.
I’m a woman and it’s one of my deepest memories of working for a guy who has been in my position for the last eight years, and I think that is a nice thing to remember too.
This past week we had a job interview at a big hotel in Boston. I was paired with a really tall woman from the front desk when the manager came in and told us that he wasn’t going to be able to interview us because he had already interviewed two people ahead of us. The manager said he was sorry and was taking us out of the interview until he could interview us again, but he wanted us to be the first to know that he was a big fan.
That’s an interesting concept. How many times have we heard about people interviewing other people, and then they come back and interview us? I mean, it happens every day.
When a interviewer or manager shows up to a job interview, the first question is always, “What are your hobbies?” This is the first step to assessing the candidate and determining if they are a good fit for the job. It is also part of the hiring process and the interviewers are looking for something that goes beyond just a resume.
So, if you want to hire someone to work for you, you have to figure out what you want to accomplish. You don’t want someone who just wants to do a job. You don’t want someone who wants to be just a cog in the machine. You want someone who wants to contribute something to the company, to the team, to the culture.
One of the best ways to figure this out is to do your own research. Google the company and read the articles and see what they are saying about the company, their mission, their goals, their values, etc.
So we asked our Millennial intern to do some research about us, as we have a number of different things we want to accomplish in the future. She came back with some interesting ideas for the company and team, such as how we expect to build our next game, how we expect to be perceived by others, and how we expect to get to know each other better. We also talked to a number of people about the company itself, and the vision we have for it.
We spoke to some of their team members, but we don’t have a lot of detail on them, so we aren’t able to tell them specifically about what they’re doing.
We interviewed several people about what their roles will be in the company and about the company as a whole. We found out that they will be doing the same jobs as we do, but with a different name and different tasks. The biggest differences are that they will be doing a lot more work on user-interfaces and games (including the next game we will be working on).
